I received an e-mail from Shannon Alvarez telling me about a new "carpet disc" frisbee that her company had developed. I promised Shannon that I would try one out and write about it on my web site. Well for the last couple of months I have been using it and now feel qualified to tell everyone what I thnk of it. |
When I first caught it it really surprised me. It is soft and felt funny. It does seem to go pretty straight when thrown not like some of the cheap plastic frisbees we use in the winter. Here in NJ when the temperature goes down we have to put the fastback frisbees away because after a couple of tosses they break into pieces. That can get expensive. That used to mean we would go to Petsmart and get their $1.00 variety. I believe they're Humphrey Flyers. Well back to the carpet disc........ it doesn't break in the cold. It is reasonably durable......although we have had to trim off pieces of the stringy stuff the carpet is made of from time to time.
The carpet disc is made of what appears to be an indoor/outdoor carpet variety. It is therefore significantly heavier than a standard frisbee. That's no problem for me (or any dog of medium to large size). I'm not sure that it will work for a Jack Russell Terrier sized dog, however. I did learn that I have to run a bit faster as it tends to drop more quickly that a standard frisbee......there isn't much float.
One day I left it in the yard and it rained later in the day. When I picked it up to play it was soaked! We hung it up overnight in the garage and it dried just fine. It wouldn't be good to play with in the water as I do with my fastbacks. I would suspect that it might sink, although did not try to find out. All in all I like the carpet disc. I don't think I will use it in warm weather as I'll go back to my fastbacks. The carpet disc is a great solution for the winter, however. When I get some pictures developed I'll put a picture of my carpet disc on this page.
For more information about the carpet disc, following is an excerpt from the e-mail that Shannon sent to me:
We would like you to check out our new disc for disc dogs made out of carpet. They're flexible, durable and great
on their teeth and gums! It's the only soft disc that maintains aerodynamics, flying 150 feet. Please let us know
what you think. www.carpetdisc.comShannon Alvarez
